Joseph Johnston age 79, passed away on Friday, June 3, 2022 at The Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC.
Born March 20, 1943, in Washington, DC, he was the son of the late William Ferdinand and the late Helen Agnes (nee Sullivan) Johnston. Joe grew up in Mt. Ranier, MD before moving to Laurel, MD.
Joe worked as a computer programmer for NASA. Joe was active in the Boy Scouts of America (Troop # 432-St. Camillus and Troop #1250-St. Mary of the Mills), not just as a scout in his youth, but also as a Troop Leader and working at the District Council level. Joe was a member of the Knights of Columbus (Council 5547), serving as Grand Knight. Joe was also a lifelong fan of the Washington Redskins.
Joe served 4 years I the Army and was stationed in Korea. After being Honorably Discharged from the Army Joe joined the American Legion Post in Laurel.
Joe is survived by his wife of 57 years, Barbara (nee Dalseg) Johnston, his children; Joe Johnston (and his wife Karen), Jennifer Johnston-Mclaughlin (and her husband Richard), grandchildren Kristen, Boo, Jordan, Kaitlyn, Kevin & Riley. Joe is also survived by his siblings; Helen Williams (and her husband Paul), Jean Simmons (and her husband Fred), Bobby Johnston (and his wife Winnie), Joanne Murray (and her husband Merritt), Alton Johnston, Kathleen Westmoreland (and her husband Kip), Freddy Johnston and Eileen Hayden (and her husband Patrick). Joe is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are welcome to call at The Donaldson Funeral Home, P.A., 313 Talbott Avenue, Laurel, MD 20707 on Tuesday, June 7, 2022, from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated at St. Mary of the Mills Catholic Church, 114 St. Mary’s Place, Laurel, MD 20707 on Wednesday, June 8, 2022, at 11:00 AM.
