On April 8, 2016, Thomas “Tom” W. Blakey of Severn, formerly of Laurel, passed away at the age of 71. Beloved husband of April A. Blakey; Devoted father of Liisa Blakey Clayton of Hagerstown and Della Benford of Hagerstown; Caring step-father of Kenneth Naff of Glen Burnie and Steven Naff of Virginia; Loving brother of Bruce and Alec Blakey, both of Connecticut and cherished grandfather of 7. He was also survived by many other loving family members and dear friends.
Born in Connecticut, Tom graduated from the Southern Connecticut State University with a Bachelor of Arts and minors in both U.S. History and English. He then earned his Master's in Political Science from Georgetown University. He served his country as a member of the United States Army and retired after 21 years of service. He then worked for the state department before retiring again. A member of MENSA, Tom was an avid reader and owned thousands of books. A lover of nature, he belonged to numerous animal and outdoor advocacy organizations and enjoyed feeding the many different animals that would visit his home daily. Tom was a history buff and enjoyed the civil war period. He had a vast knowledge that included the common, and not so common, facts about that era. Tom will be remembered for his generous and caring nature – both for others and for animals.
A ceremony with honors will be held at Arlington National Cemetery on July 19th at 2:00 PM. Please arrive at the main building no later than 1:00 PM.
